Welcome
to the summer edition of Serpentaire-Serpentarius. I hope you're
having as much fun as I am. Things are calm on the ethereal frontlines...
I'm looking forward to the next big thing in movies, Minority Report.
Read the article below to find out more about the story's illustrious
author.
News...
Philip
K. Dick and Minority Report
"Reality
is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away."
- Philip K.Dick (1928-1982)
Philip
K. Dick made a career out of questioning, "What is reality?"
and shattered conventional definitions more than once.
With
the upcoming release of the film Minority Report, the late author
is, after several years, in the Hollywood Spotlight. The movie also
marks the return of Director Steven Spielberg to the sci-fi genre.
Not since Blade Runner has an adaptation of a PKD tale attracted
the attention of producers and viewers alike.
Blade
Runner (1982), starring Harrison Ford is based on Dick's novel,
"Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep", and tackles another
important question, "What is human?"
Who
has ever read, "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale"?
The story provided the key elements for Arnold Schwartzeneggar's,
Total Recall (1990), although for many PKD fans the movie left much
to be desired. Then there was Screamers, the 1996 film starring
Peter Weller and based on Dick's short story, "Second Variety".
Will
Minority Report live up to Philip K Dick fans' expectations? Will
Tom Cruise's character be as compelling as Harrison Ford's in Blade
Runner?
The
Jury is still out for the moment.

Navy Hears Deep-Sea Monster
U.S. Navy scientists call it Bloop. The monster apparantly lives
in the deepest ocean depths.
During
the Cold War, paranoia and espionage reached a high point. The Navy
planted autonomous hydrophones (underwater microphones) deep in
the ocean to track Soviet submarines. At this depth, the sound waves
become trapped in a layer of water known as the "deep sound
channel." The temperature and pressure keep the sound waves
moving without being scattered by the ocean surface or the ocean
floor. Typical sounds include the distinct and easily-identifiable
noises of whales, ships, or earthquakes. Iin 1997, something strange
appeared. The Navy scientists started hearing a strange, new noise
that sounds like a whale. But it's no whale. In fact, it's louder
than any recognized noise produced by an animal --even by the largest
whales.
Phil Lobel, a marine biologist at Boston University, doubts that
any known type of marine life could produce such a noise. But he
does believe that the sound is biological in origin. So the giant
sea monster theory has not been ruled out.
So the giant sea monster theory, in theory, could actually hold.
And what exactly does "giant" mean? The creature's noises
were picked up simultaneously by two microphones that were 3,000
miles apart.
